Learn how to easily install a graphics card into your gaming PC with our step-by-step guide. Whether you’re upgrading or setting up a new system, we’ll walk you through the process for a smooth installation.
Upgrading or installing a graphics card in your gaming PC can significantly boost your system’s performance, allowing you to enjoy the latest games at higher resolutions and settings. At Astral Computers, we understand the importance of having a powerful GPU, and that’s why we’ve created this guide to walk you through the installation process. Whether you’re setting up one of our pre-built desktop PCs or adding a new GPU to your existing rig, this guide will help you get everything up and running smoothly.
First, you might be wondering why we sometimes ship the graphics card separately from the rest of the system. The primary reason is to prevent damage during shipping. GPUs are delicate components, and by shipping them separately, we minimize the risk of them being damaged in transit.
Before we dive into the installation, let’s make sure you have everything you need:
If you’ve purchased a pre-built gaming PC from Astral Computers, the only tool you’ll need is the screwdriver, as everything else is included in the packaging.
Start by removing the side panel of your PC case. This might involve loosening a few screws or simply pulling off the panel, depending on your case model. Consult your case’s manual if you’re unsure.
Once your card is unboxed, take a moment to familiarize yourself with its key components. On the top edge, you’ll find the PCIe power connector, which connects to the power supply. The back of the card has the IO shield, where you’ll connect your monitor cables.
Finally, the bottom edge houses the PCIe interface, which will slot into the motherboard.
Now, turn your attention to the motherboard. Most desktop motherboards have several PCIe slots, but for optimal performance, you’ll want to use the topmost PCIe x16 slot. This slot provides the fastest connection to your CPU, ensuring that your GPU can deliver peak performance.
If you’ve purchased a pre-built system from us, we’ve made things easier by pre-removing the necessary PCIe slot covers. This means you can jump right to installing your card.
Before installing the card, check for any obstructions. Some cases may have a protective plate over the PCIe slots. If so, loosen or remove it to clear the way. Make sure the fishtail clip on the PCIe slot is pressed down flat—this will allow the card to snap securely into place.
Now, it’s time to install the card. Start by Aligning the golden teeth of the PCIe interface with the x16 slot on the motherboard. Make sure that the card also aligns with the coordinating screw holes on the side of the case.
Hold the graphics card with one or two hands, and keep the interface aligned to the slot and level. Then press the card into the slot until you hear the fishtail clip click or you visually see it lock into place.
While holding the card with one hand, use the other to loosely screw in the top and bottom screws to secure the card to the case. Tighten the top screw lightly, then insert the bottom screw, using your hand to lightly lift and support the graphics card. Finish tightening the top screw fully and then the bottom screw, at which point you can release the graphics card.
Next, locate the PCIe power cable inside your case. It should have a clip that aligns with the connector on the top edge of your GPU. Carefully plug in the power cable, ensuring it’s fully seated.
With the GPU installed, reattach the protective plate that covers the PCIe slots. Depending on your case, you might need to do this before securing the screws for the GPU.
Finally, connect your monitor to the GPU using HDMI or DisplayPort cables. Plug your PC into a power outlet, switch on the power supply, and you’re ready to boot up and enjoy your upgraded gaming experience.
If you ever need to remove your GPU, simply reverse the steps. Disconnect the power cable, remove the screws, and gently press down on the fishtail clip before pulling the card out of the slot. If the card feels stuck, try wiggling it slightly while pressing the clip with a Q-tip or pencil.
